Canaan Fir

FIR: Canaan Fir (Abies balsamea var. phanerolepis)
Size Grows to 50’
Characteristics Closely related to the Balsam and Fraser Fir varieties. Needles are .50 to 1.25 inches long. Very fragrant, good color. Symmetrical, dense, pyramidal crown.
Growing Conditions Full sun. Cool, sheltered, moist location, well-drained soil. Restrictions limited as far as soil types and conditions. Northern areas, from sea level to 6,000’. Will not do well in heavy, wet, clay soils. Better tolerance of a wet site than Fraser Fir and will withstand slightly drier areas as well.
Hardiness Zones Zone 4-7
Uses Excellent for landscape. Good survival rate. Used as an ornamental, Christmas tree, or timber.
